On meeting the patient a large pool of information was gathered, detailing the potential factors of disturbance which were hampering his vitality and health. By addressing the patient’s constitution, removing obstacles and stimulating the Vis Medicatrix Naturae, a naturopathic approach has been taken. Remedies and therapy that follow the therapeutic order have been suggested in hopes of achieving a normal and harmonious equilibrium, reducing the chronic pain and suffering previously felt. Approach In considering the patient’s state of health, I consider Primum Non Nocere, or, First, do no harm. This approach involves working with the natural reactions of the Vis Medicatrix Naturae, in harmony with the intelligent wisdom of the vital force. To encourage health in overcoming disease, it is important to introduce remedies that pose minimum risk. Considering Tolle Causam, illness occurs causally. It follows that as the factors that disturb health are removed, medicines and therapies should support self-healing processes. In this way, symptoms that arise as the body processes change (which may involve acute illness and discharge) should not be suppressed, as this may only mask the root cause of disease. Therefore, paying close attention to the brevity of symptoms helps paint a complete picture of the individual present for treatment. Each varied detail of the patient’s lifestyle assists this holistic approach, tailoring an ideal course of treatment, perhaps locating the centre of gravity and working towards a harmonious state of health. Factors of Disease The patient has a varied history of illness. He has suffered from bouts of bronchitis frequently in his life, which appear an acute reaction, likely in response to heavy smoking. As he has quit several times, it could be the case that the bronchitis develops during a discharge process, inflaming with severity, but abating. Meanwhile, the patient is suffering long term from symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis. These conditions have been present for five years, and appear to be chronic. This is noted due to the inability for the system and its vital force to react sufficiently on its own, likely due to the cumulative disturbances affecting vitality over his life. The severity of this illness seems to be the centre of gravity for the patient, which must be addressed. The patient’s lifestyle seems to have a wide variety of potential factors of disturbance. Before coming to the first consultation he had already reduced the intake of sugary sodas and coffee. However, his diet was still largely comprised of packaged and processed foods. It could be said that this kind of diet, common in today’s society, would align with Lindlahrs’ noted cause of disease; the accumulation of waste and poisons in the system. The extent of sugary drinks, alcohol and smoking the patient undertook would all be creating toxic build-ups. Due to the patient’s extensive pain he does not exercise regularly. This, along with other factors, may be part of the reason for the lowered vitality, another cause of disease as suggested by Lindlahr. Abnormal composition of blood and lymph, the third cause of disease, may well be influenced by his smoking, drinking, exposure to toxic materials, but also the wide variety of medications he had been consuming in an attempt to remedy his pain. All of these substances creating biochemical reactions affect the system’s ability to function harmonically. Treatment In attending to the patient a varied course of restorative practices were suggested and employed to move towards self-healing. These constitutional medicines follow the Naturopathic Therapeutic order, as detailed. By first establishing the conditions of health, the disturbing factors should stay removed. Then creating a new healthy regime that includes an Anti-inflammatory Diet with the removal of artificial sweeteners (that may directly affect the patient’s MS). This regime includes the increased water intake of 3 litres daily. The suggestion of B-complex, Vitamin D and Omega-3 supplements could also be considered factors for establishing healthy internal conditions, by attending to dietetic deficiencies. So, by reviewing this case study we can see many aspects of Naturopathic philosophy enacted. By approaching the patient as a unique individual with a history of varied illnesses and factors for disease, we create a detailed approach to assist him in self-healing. The harmonious and healthful way the patient’s system can operate still exists, and the naturopathic approach allows for these healing conditions to resurface.
